It has been known for some time that those that look good, generally, with an emphasis on “generally”, feel good. This feeling is of utmost importance to researchers studying anti-aging beauty therapies and methodologies for achieving a youthful appearance as we age.
I have written about how scent can change your mood and affect your hormone balance, improving your anti-aging beauty quotient in the process. It turns out that scent is only one aspect that can directly affects your longevity and beauty, confirmed by a recent study led by professor Kaare Christensen of The University of Southern Denmark.
The objective of the study was “To determine whether perceived age correlates with survival and important age related phenotypes”. Within the study, perceived age related to how a person felt that they looked, so in turn, it was not simply the actual beauty of that person, rather how that person felt they looked. Given a wide range of perceptions, the bottom-line has to do with whether a person feels good about how they look. This can include dress, physical appearance a healthy support system and myriad other unquantifiable aspects that weren’t disclosed in this study.
The study was well monitored and included sets of twins so as to establish a control setting for the participants. Overall, the test determined that; “physical and cognitive tests and molecular biomarker of aging (leucocyte telomere length)” reflected a measurable and significant affect from perceived youthfulness. That means, if you believed you were young, then you lived longer and key to this study, more healthfully.
This study doesn’t suggest that you go out and buy thousands of dollars worth of skincare and start on a regimen of salmon and whole grains immediately. Rather, it relates to how a person feels, rather than the physical. In essence, if you feel good and young, you in turn will live longer and more healthfully. The power of the brain relates directly to living longer and indeed, confirms the brains ability to correct and maintain our physical bodies if directed to do so in a positive environment.
